A little about Operation Healthy Hearts:
Operation Healthy Hearts was established in 2012 as a grass root organization effort to feed individuals experiencing homelessness nutritious and culturally sensitive meals. Founder Jaqueline Villalta (she/her/ella) partnered up with local churches until one day she was approached by a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and offered an opportunity to facilitate weekly resource events for people experiencing homelessness (PEH) at Whittier Narrows Park in South El Monte. Since then, with the support of hundreds of community volunteers, the pop-up safe space event has expanded to include the distribution of hygiene items, harm reduction supplies, clothing, pet supplies, warm meals, foodbank items and haircuts! Other resources at the pop-ups include job placement assistance, transportation aid (Metro passes), legal support, and general case management services/referrals.
We are overwhelmed with joy at the potential behind this collaborative effort between amazing individuals and community-based organizations like @reach_la, @legalaidla, @betterangelsla, and @lacada_social who are passionate about reducing barriers to care limiting marginalized populations from accessing the services they need and rightfully deserve.
